I will tell you one thing. If you told me a year ago that I would been sitting, shooting the shit with Rich Gedman, I doubt I would have even acknowledged it. But at 10:03 this morning, it all came to fruition. I actually did it. I enjoyed this entire process way too much to quit. From not only pretty much cold calling this interview, to the pursuit and persistence. Rich and his team were more than welcoming but I pretty much just called the WooSox and said 'Get me Rich" and didn't stop till it worked. I really wouldn't have quit because he was the guest I needed to solidify this project here locally. The rumors and stories I've heard throughout my life were true. He is indeed a super nice guy, super knowledgeable, extremely humble and he loves Worcester. It was surreal just shooting the breeze with one of my childhood heroes.

This is the one I enjoyed doing the most research because I really got to dig deep into his career and I learned a lot of really cool facts about his career. The first thing I came across that was pretty cool. When Rich got his first nod for an at bat, he pinch hit for none other than Carl Yastrzemski. Are you kidding? 20yr old kid getting his first shot to slap the ball with the eyes of the great Boston Red Sox Slugger Yaz! You could tell he enjoyed telling us about this because he got a chance to be grateful to Yastrzemski for his blessing on the AB. Another cool fact was that the day he got his first start catching for the Boston Red Sox, he caught a 1-hitter thrown by none other than Dennis Eckersley. He ended up replacing Carlton Fisk. Storybook beginning to a very long successful major league career as a player. Sporting News Rookie of the Year, 2 time All Star, had a rocket for an arm throwing people out. Also asked him about catching the Rockets 20k game. He gave us his account, also said Roger was his favorite pitcher to catch for, then proceeded to name the rest of the Red Sox mid 80's staff, even shouted Oil Can out. Who didn't love Oil Can Boyd? We didn't touch too hard as his career as a coach but I know he won the CanAm League Championship with The Worcester Tornadoes his first year coaching. Rich was nice enough to give us his time on a gameday so we are grateful. We probably could have talked to him for a week.
Overall, I'm still kind of beside myself. Best part of the whole thing is that Rich had a good time and said he would be more than happy to return. I cannot wait. I got initially what I wanted to see for myself today. His love for the city. His love for the game of baseball. His appreciation and his gratitude for the Old Timer's that showed him the path. His humble attitude for what the man's accomplished is surreal. Just a genuine guy who believes in Worcester. So do I. Learn something from this one people. This man has been around the world and knows how special Worcester is. He came back. He's here. Worcester Loves you Rich Gedman. Thank you again! Till next time...Wooooooooooooooooo!
